The Benefits of DIY Projects

Not a lot of people realize that we have Do-It-Yourself classes in the Kolya Apothecary for everything from making your spa products from scratch to crafting teas for flavour and medicinal properties. The growing trends of getting back to the basics and learning to do things ourselves are exemplified in the popularity of websites like Pinterest, where people share their homemade projects and crafts. But besides having some products at the end of the day, what are the psychological and societal benefits of DIY projects?

1. Skills Development: This might seem a bit obvious, but when you learn to do something new on your own, you are adding to you personal repertoire of skills. These new skills means you can barter and exchange with other skilled individuals in the future. All of this turns into dollars saved. Ultimately, raw ingredients cost a lot less than premade, prepackaged, marketed products ever will and at the end of the day, you can say you made it!

2. Self-Reliance and Confidence: If something breaks in your house or you are not feeling well, you might be apt to panic because you don’t know what to do. But if you have increased your knowledge area with, say, herbs for example, you can head to your local supplier and pick up the ingredients you need for a nourishing, tonic tea that can revitalize you – all without the worry that you aren’t doing well enough for yourself or your family.

3. A Deeper Connection: If you are using raw ingredients made by nature, you’re bound to have a deeper connection with those ingredients, where they came from and what they can be used for. Additionally, by extension, you will likely learn more about how and where they grow and how they have been traditionally used by cultures around the world. All of this increases our awareness of the earth that so freely provides for our needs and get us out of the packaged mentality. Crafting things with our hands also insures that the products we put in our mouths and our bodies aren’t in contact with machines more than they are humans.

4. A Deeper Appreciation: Making your own skincare products and household cleaning products gives you a deeper appreciation and understanding of the time and care that goes into the production of those products. In a commercialized, throw-away world where waste is beyond measurable, this kind of gratitude for what we have is so important.

5. A Deeper Sense of Community: If there is one thing about DIYers, it is that they congregate together to unite in their unabashed do-it-yourselfness! There are plenty of people who meet up to craft together, take classes like the ones we offer at the Kolya Apothecary or utilize online forums to share ideas and tips.
